The premium geranium essential oil used in perfumery is known as Bourbon and is grown and distilled on the island of Reunion, near Madagascar. It is the most expensive geranium oil; the other types are Algerian, Moroccan, and French. The oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stalks, and flowers, however, most of the oil glands are found in the leaves. Geranium’s fragrance resembles that of a rose with minty undertones, which is not surprising since three of its constituents (geraniol, citronellol, and linalool) are also found in rose oil. It is a wonderful balancing oil and assists women during menopause or suffering from PMS. It stimulates the lymphatic system and can help relieve water retention and swelling. Oily complexions benefit from its sebum reducing properties, while dry complexions benefit from its normalizing and anti-aging properties. It can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite. One of my favorite essential oils, geranium is a perfumer’s dream because it is a perfect stand alone oil, yet blends perfectly with a variety of other oils.
