One of the top questions we get asked by our customers is, “Do you use parabens in your products?” The answer is no, we do not. I founded Hothouse Botanicals in 2007 because I wanted to create a line of bath and body products that are free of harmful preservatives, toxic ingredients, and synthetic fragrances/perfumes and colors. My mother and aunt had recently survived breast cancer and our family was examining things that could possibly have contributed to the disease. While we will never know for certain what caused their cancer, there are steps that we can take in our lives to be healthier and one of those steps is buying natural and organic bath and body products. At Hothouse Botanicals, we use a completely natural preservative in our body butters — grapefruit seed extract.
Grapefruit seed extract has great anti-bacterial and preservative qualities. It is extracted from organically grown grapefruit (Citrus paridisi). Our grapefruit seed extract is made in the U.S. and has marvelous stabilizing properties.
All of our other products do not require a preservative, so they are preservative-free. Those products have a shelf-life of between 6-12 months.
