A study in Germany recently found that jasmine has similar effects on the body as Valium.  Jasmine was found to be molecularly comparable to sedatives, according a study published by German scientists last week.  Breathing the scent of jasmine aided in anxiety and sleep relief, according to the “Journal of Biological Chemistry” report.

In the future, a whiff of jasmine molecules (transported into the blood via the lungs) could be substituted for psychotropic prescription drugs, says scientists at the Ruhr University Bochum and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.

Hundreds of fragrances were tested to see how they effected the function of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).  Bochum Professor Hanns Hatt said in a statement, “Applications in sedation, anxiety, excitement and aggression relieving treatment and sleep induction therapy are all imaginable. The results can also be seen as evidence of a scientific basis for aromatherapy.”

One of the priciest ingredients in perfume making, jasmine absolute is expensive to make since 12,000 pounds of jasmine flowers are needed to produce two pounds of the oil.  One pound of jasmine absolute costs around $2,200.  Our Love’s Embrace Organic Solid Perfume contains jasmine in its blend of six precious essential oils, whereas Seductress contains both neroli and jasmine in its blend of eight precious essential oils.
