Ylang ylang flowers

If you want an aromatherapy experience from your bath & body products, make sure that the label lists essential oil.  Synthetic oils made from chemicals appear on labels as “fragrance” and/or “parfum/perfume.”  Synthetic oils have no therapeutic value, as they are chemically constructed and do not contain the same constituents of essential oils (each oil can have up to 300).  Many companies say that they have natural and organic ingredients and then they add synthetic “fragrance” and/or “perfume” which are petroleum-based synthetic compounds.  These synthetic compounds contain no aromatherapy benefits, are much cheaper in cost than essential oils, and often are not tested for safety.  We use 100% natural essential oils to scent our aromatherapy products.  You can recognize essential oils on labels by their Latin name, for example, lime essential oil is listed as “Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil.”  Essential oils are the very essence of a plant and are obtained from flowers, peels of fruit, seeds, bark, leaves, wood, resin and balsam.  Inhaled aroma stimulates areas of the brain, where emotions and memory are triggered.

cruelty free and vegan

When we created our product line in 2007, we made a conscious decision to not use any animal-derived ingredients in our formulas.  We wanted our products to be effective, luxurious, and cruelty-free.  All of our products are 100% Vegan-friendly and contain no animal ingredients or animal-derived ingredients.

Being animal-free means NEVER using:

  • beeswax (often found in lip balms and mascaras)
  • milk (found in soaps)
  • collagen (skin strengthener derived from cows)
  • carmine (a colorant from beetle shells)
  • bone char (used in processing sugar to make it white)

Instead, we use these cruelty-free ingredients:

  • candelilla wax (made from plants) in our Cocoa/Lime Hemp Lip Balms
  • natural organic coconut oil and other non-animal-derived oils for moisturizing
  • iron oxides, chromium oxides, and ultramarines for colorant in our Whipped Sugar Scrubs
  • natural unrefined cane sugar in our Whipped Sugar Scrubs

Farm Sanctuary's Guide to Compassionate Living

Farm Sanctuary’s 2009 Guide to Compassionate Living just came out and you can find Hothouse Botanicals listed in the back.  The Guide to Compassionate Living is a comprehensive directory of companies that offer animal-free products.  The expanding ethical goods market has not only led to the creation of products that please vegans from all walks of life, but also proves that compassionate consumers can and do effect positive change every day.

With twelve more pages of content, fresh images and a brand new “Workout Gear” category, the 2009 edition is by far Farm Sanctuary’s best to date.   As soon as the redesigned Veg for Life website, www.vegforlife.org, is up and running (expected some time later this year), the Guide will be offered as a free, downloadable PDF.  The Veg for Life website will offer:

  • tips on how to easily adopt and stick with a healthy vegan lifestyle
  • discover vegan health and nutrition news and great vegan recipes
  • access information about veg-friendly restaurants, vacation spots and more
  • learn about compassionate companies
  • see what veggie events are happening in your area
  • network with others who share your compassionate values

Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. With the help of more than 200,000 members and supporters nationwide, they not only work to create a more compassionate world for farm animals through public awareness campaigns, legal advocacy and education programs, but also provide refuge to thousands of formerly abused and neglected cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals at our shelters in New York and California.

Essential Oil

If you’re planning a long trip this Summer, motion sickness can sometimes interfere with your vacation.  Here is a spray mist recipe from New Directions Aromatics’ book 500 Formulas for Aromatherapy that can help calm stomachs and make your Summer travel much easier.

Ingredients:

4 oz. (120ml) Pure Water

30 drops Ginger (CO2) Essential Oil

30 drops Pimento Leaf Essential Oil

30 drops Cinnamon (CO2) Essential Oil

30 drops Bourbon Geranium Essential Oil

30 drops Cardamom Essential Oil

Instructions:

Mix the essential oils together first and then add them to the water.   Since the oil will tend to separate out, you’ll need to shake your bottle each time before misting.

If you prefer, you can also use the pure essential oil blend in a diffuser, or even just put it on a tissue and inhale as required.
