Buy your favorite deep conditioner and then follow these easy steps:

1. After cleansing your hair, gently towel it dry and apply a generous amount of deep conditioner.
2. Massage the conditioner through your hair from root to ends (if you have an oily scalp, skip the roots and focus on the ends).
3. Wrap your head in a wet towel or shower cap (you can wrap the shower cap with aluminum foil to help trap heat).
4. Sit outside in the heat for about 20 minutes. The heat from the sun and the heat from your head will open the hair cuticle and allow the beneficial conditioning to penetrate the hair.
5. Wash out the conditioner and dry. Enjoy your moisturized, healthy hair!

This treatment helps hair become soft and shiny by conditioning the cuticle.  Be sure to keep up your regular trims to get rid of split ends and help damaged hair.

Here is an easy recipe to make at home for a refreshing facial mist:

  • 1 tbsp each organic peppermint leaves, lavender buds, & calendula petals
  • 3 tbsp organic green tea leaves
  • 4 cups boiling distilled water
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil

Add herbs and tea leaves to a heat-tolerant pitcher or large French Press and pour boiling water over them. Cover the top and let steep for at least 20 minutes. Strain and cool, add peppermint essential oil, then pour into a bottle with a spray top cap. Makes 32 oz.

Store in your refrigerator for a cooling pick-me-up.

Shake the spray bottle and mist your face with your eyes closed. Enjoy!

During hot summer months you may be tempted to forgo baths in favor of cold showers, however, there are many benefits to taking a mineral rich sea salt bath. Dead Sea Salts contain magnesium, calcium and potassium. A summertime bath filled with Dead Sea salts can help to:

  • keep your skin naturally soft and glowing (especially important during bathing suit season!)
  • soften your skin (from the mineral-rich salts)
  • increase circulation (which gently sloughs off dead skin cells without additional scrubbing)
  • relieve bloat
  • calm nerves
  • soothe stiff muscles

P.S. You can opt for a refreshing cool bath during the summer. Check out Hothouse Botanicals’ Aromatherapy Bath Salts with Bali Reef Salt and Dead Sea Salt.

Does anyone know what real flowers smell like? As a society, we are inundated with unnatural scents. Faux scents are in almost everything and have deadened our comprehension of the nuances and magic in natural scents.  Because of their low cost, synthetics now dominate in the world of personal fragrance. However, the gaining popularity of aromatherapy has made natural oils more readily available.

There is something magical about the smell of an essential oil versus its synthetic counterpart. Scientists have tried to replicate essential oils, but have fallen short, since they have not been able to reproduce several key constituents that are found in natural essential oils. There is no comparison between the smell or the benefits of an essential oil compared to a synthetic. In a synthetic oil, no aromatherapy benefit is gleaned, plus synthetics often harbor phthalates. Phthalates have been found to cause reproductive defects, as well as infertility. Avoid products with “fragrance” or  “perfume” on the label, as these are chemical cocktails where phthalates often hide. Look instead for products with essential oils on the ingredient list, which usually are listed by their Latin name, i.e. Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Oil.
